Criminal Law addresses wrongs that have potential criminal consequences. Although some acts, such as an automobile accident can have financial consequences if one is sued, it may also attract criminal consequences depending on the facts. The criminal law is governed by the Criminal Code of Canada that applies to all of Canada as Federal Law. But each Province decides procedural issues. The criminal law of Canada is a result of legislation, precedent, case law that has occurred before and the common law. The Criminal Code is prosecuted in Ontario by the Ministry of the Attorney General and the Assistant Crown Attorneys. Other statutes, such as the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, or the Goods and Services Act is prosecuted by the Federal Department of Justice. There is also Ontario Provincial Offences Act, offences such as the Highway Traffic Act and the Liquor License Act that are prosecuted by the Provincial Prosecutors Office. |
